Enjoying your garden through the cooler months

The cooler weather has arrived, and it’s undoubtedly here to stay for the next few months! However, just because the temperatures are dropping and there’s a chill in the air, doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your garden through the autumn and winter seasons. The following suggestions will ensure your garden is prepared and ready to be enjoyed during the cooler months.

1. Ensure all outdoor furniture is protected: The coming months will see plenty of rainfall and damp days, so it’s especially important to ensure that your outdoor furniture is properly protected. This way, you can enjoy your furniture while you rest assured that it will be able to withstand the nastier weather. Fill defects with our Woodfiller to help prevent any further damage and follow with our Wood Preserver and quality outdoor-approved paint. If you want to switch things up a bit, try painting your outdoor furniture a darker, autumnal shade—we love a deep red (like our Old Red or Brickwork), a rich green (like our Conifer or Dark Green) and a classic brown (like our Toasted Almond or Spicey Brown).

2. Invest in an outdoor space heater or fire pit: With the cooler weather, it’s wise, if not necessary, to have a safe and efficient mode of heating your garden. Outdoor space heaters can do the trick, but if you’re looking for something a bit more authentic, opt for a contained fire pit. Additionally, you can use fire pits to roast marshmallows or sausages, so it’s much more versatile. It will also give your outdoor area a lovely glow.

3. Have a tarp on-hand to cover furniture when it’s not in use: In order to lessen the damage done to outdoor furniture by Mother Nature’s elements, obtain a large tarp to cover your furniture when it’s not in use. This waterproof tarp will at least keep out some of the precipitation, although it won’t provide 100% protection, so a waterproof wood preserver is still necessary.

4. Get cushions to use with your garden furniture: In order to preserve heat and feel more comfortable outdoors, buy some pillows to sit on when using your garden furniture. Putting a plush barrier between yourself and the cold surface will shield you against unnecessary chills and make it much easier for you to relax. Specialty waterproof cushions can be purchased at most home or garden stores, but any cushions will work. If you’re going outside, just remember to grab a pillow from the couch!

5. Wrap yourself in warmth when outdoors: Make sure to have some blankets handy for when you decide to venture out into your garden. The more insulation you have, the less you’ll notice the chill. We especially love soft faux fur throws and tartan wool rugs for efficient and stylish warmth!

6. Decorate with the elements of the season: Even though it’s autumn, there are still plenty of décor options for adding a bit of beauty to your garden. This time of year, in the run up to Halloween, we love arrangements featuring pumpkins and gourds, cornstalks and even brightly-coloured leaves! Some flowers and plants are still in season—crocuses and mums are especially prevalent, and evergreen shrubs and trees are always popular.

The above tips will help guarantee you’ll be able to enjoy your garden, no matter the season! For more expert tips, call into your local Sadolin stockist or visit us on the web.
