Five things to do in your garden before March

With February fast approaching, spring will be here before you know it. For the simplest transition into the new season, it’s best to start preparing now. The following recommendations will ensure your garden is in the best shape it can be, and ready for the months ahead.

1. Order flowers and supplies: It’s wise to stock up on spring flowers and garden supplies now. You’ll have your pick of these if you start planning early, and buying now will ensure you’re not disappointed if they’re unavailable later. This will force you to create a strategy when it comes to your garden, which will help your exteriors live up to their full potential.

2. Make repairs to fences, decks and timber furniture: Your exteriors have more or less been in hibernation during the winter months. With the cold weather and rain, it’s unsurprising that they haven’t gotten much usage or attention. Now’s the time to take a closer look at your garden features and repair any damage that may have been done. Ensure the integrity of timber structures, fix nicks and buff scratches, and use a wood preserver for continued protection.

3. Organise your shed: In the spring and summer months, your shed will get plenty of usage. It will become the control room for your exteriors, so dust off the cobwebs and make sure it’s in fighting shape. It’s a good idea to make sure it is clean and orderly so you can easily find whatever it is you’re looking for and have a clear, safe space to store utensils.

4. Clean debris and winter build up: Over the winter months, rain and storms can wreak havoc on your exteriors, leaving them a little worse for wear. Use a cloth to gently clean dirt and grime from your outdoor timber. Carefully sweep decks to clear, and use a pressure washer on driveways, walkways and other stone. This will give you a clean slate to work with, and is a great way to welcome spring.

5. Waterproof: If you still haven’t waterproofed your wooden exteriors (one of the most important steps in timber maintenance!) now is the time to do so. Spring in Ireland is notoriously wet, so be sure to use the correct waterproofing formulas for your deck or timber furniture. Now is also a great opportunity to repaint any timber that may have chipped over the months.
