The dos and don’ts of garden furniture

The spring season is upon us and we’re soaking up every bit of sunshine that we can get! If you’re like us, you’ll be spending plenty of time outside in the coming months, which is why it’s vital to have the right garden furniture to best accommodate you and your family. We’ve put together a handy checklist of dos and dont’s to make sure you’re prepared to enjoy your spring and summer in style and comfort.

DO protect your wooden garden furniture with a quality protective stain: Give your garden furniture gentle cleaning after the harsh winter months using a soft cloth with some very mild soap and water. This will remove any built-up particles that have formed and will give you a nice base for your stain. Lightly sand your wooden furniture if needed and then paint your furniture with a quality protective stain. Our Classic All-Purpose Woodstain is a general purpose woodstain, suitable as a two coat application for planed or rough sawn timber.  A solvent based stain for use on decking, cladding, fencing, fascias and garden furniture.  Touch dry 4-6 hours.  Recoat in 16-24 hours.  Available in 1, 2.5 & 5 litre packs.  Traditional “wood” colours are available off the shelf, while our extended colour range is available only from Colourmixing stockists.

Don’t be afraid when it comes to colour: If you think that your garden is in need of a pick-me-up, why not add some brightness through your garden furniture?! Painting your furniture is simple and cost-effective, and it will immediately rejuvenate your outdoor space. Our Sadolin Superdec provides an outstanding opaque finish and long-lasting protection for wooden surfaces. Superdec comes in a wide range of colours (up to 30,000 shades!) via our Colourmix service, so you’re sure to find the perfect colour for your space.

Do get comfortable: If you’re going to be spending time in your garden, not only should you invest in quality furniture but you should add other furnishings to make your lounge area as comfortable as possible— a space you won’t ever want to leave. Make your garden experience more luxurious with accessories such as blankets to cosy up with when the sun sets and pillows to soften your pretty perch. Add interest and colour with fun textile patterns in outdoor-ready fabrics.

Don’t place your garden furniture in a wet area: You’ll want to create your garden oasis in a space that’s conducive to traffic, and if your grass is too wet and soggy things could get very messy, very fast. Not only will your furniture sink into the soil, it will age much faster if it’s constantly exposed to dampness. Place your furniture on a high and sturdy spot in the garden that won’t attract or pool water.

DO cover your garden furniture when it’s particularly wet outside: While your wooden furniture will be very well protected with our superior formulations, it doesn’t hurt to offer additional shelter from the elements, especially during particularly wet or stormy days. Many furniture sets come with a tarp to cover the items but you’re certain to find a suitable cover at your local hardware store as well.

We’re ready for the sunshine ahead and thanks to the tips above your garden will be ready too! Your local Sadolin stockist has the tools and products you need to get started.
